New project

Standard

So, while in California visiting my family in June, I espied a box sitting in the corner of my room.  Inside, an unfinished spinning wheel kit.

My memory is crap; mom says we ordered it (my idea/request) shortly before I moved.  I…  have to take her word for it, I don’t remember anything about it, but I’ve always wanted to learn to spin.

Well, either way, it was mailed back to Virginia and arrived shortly before my birthday.

Kinda overwhelming in pieces like that.  We picked up the stain and finishing, and have been slowly working on it over the past month.  This weekend, we finally took the final steps and assembled it (because we were tired of it taking up the back-half of our dining table, where it’s been hanging out for the various “cure” stages.)

But!  I thinks it looks awesome!

Whee!  It’s awesome.  Well-made, too, if the difficulty of fitting some of the pieces together is any indication.  It still needs some oiling in parts.  Project of the moment: learning to treadle.

It’s actually a lot harder than you would think to tap your foot like that.  I’m both excited and terrified at the prospect of needing to add stuff in my hands to it, too.

  1. eeee, how exciting! wow, it looks great!

One of the other bloggers I follow does her own spinning – http://jmeadows.livejournal.com/ – if you’re interested in having someone else (who understands it) to talk to. She’s been very talkative about her hobby, and encouraged me to give it a try. *grins*
